Official guidance checked 25 October 2026 (AEST). This is a household checklist, not a report of a local outbreak.

After rain, start with places where water has collected around your home. Tip out removable containers, check screens and protect yourself from bites. Only begin when it is safe to go outside; if your property has flooded, read our Moreton Bay flood-safety guide first.

Why check for mosquitoes after rain?

City of Moreton Bay identifies freshwater mosquitoes that breed in pooled water after rain, and container-breeding mosquitoes that use rainwater in items such as buckets and plant saucers. Removing these small water sources is a practical place to start at home.

The checklist below concerns ordinary rainwater in an otherwise safe yard. Leave floodwater, contaminated debris and damaged areas alone until the property is safe to access.

Start with containers at ground level

Walk around the areas you can safely reach and look for:

  • Buckets, plant saucers and unused containers: empty collected rainwater and wipe the inside where practical.
  • Outdoor toys, tyres and tarpaulins: check places that trap water; store movable items dry and under cover.
  • Birdbaths and pet bowls: refresh the water and clean the inside regularly.
  • Loose rubbish: remove items that can collect water, provided they are safe to handle.

The Queensland Government's breeding-site checklist recommends checking around the home weekly. Another rainfall is a useful reminder to look again.

Check gutters and rainwater tanks safely

Council includes blocked gutters among potential breeding places. From safe ground, note visible leaf build-up or overflow for a maintenance enquiry. Do not climb onto a wet roof or use a ladder just to investigate mosquitoes. Our existing gutter-maintenance guide covers the wider cleaning questions.

For rainwater tanks, inspect accessible screens and seals for damage or gaps. Use Council's mosquito-management advice for tank protection, and arrange appropriate help for inaccessible parts. Keep swimming-pool maintenance up to date; a cleaning quote is not a substitute for tank, pool or pest advice.

Check flyscreens and protect yourself from bites

Queensland Health advises checking that home flyscreens are in good condition. Look for torn mesh or damage around doors and windows; cleaning a screen does not repair a hole.

For time outdoors, Queensland Health recommends long, loose, light-coloured clothing and closed shoes. Its guidance includes repellent containing DEET or picaridin on exposed skin, used and reapplied according to the product label, especially around dawn and dusk. Follow the label's suitability and application instructions.

If you or someone at home feels unwell, seek medical advice. Use the linked health guidance for health questions rather than a cleaning enquiry.

What if mosquitoes remain a problem?

Your yard is only part of the picture: Moreton Bay also has saltmarsh mosquitoes. Council's mosquito-management page explains its program and links to a mosquito request form for local feedback. Use that channel for concerns about mosquitoes nearby.

Clearing gutters can address a maintenance issue; it does not guarantee a mosquito-free yard. Avoid treating a routine exterior clean as mosquito control.

Need help with routine cleaning?

If you found leaf build-up or need windows and screens cleaned, explore our gutter cleaning and window cleaning services.
